COVID – 19 has denied athletes, from the casual to the professional, the outlet of competition, comradery and even livelihood. Seasons are cancelled, courts, alleys, pools and courses are closed. In France running in public is banned during the day…

In celebration of the denied athlete in all of us, let’s look at a few prints by John Copley:

John Copley 1875-1950

John Copley made over 253 lithographs and 155 etchings. He and his wife, lithographer, Ethel Gabain, are considered amongst the pre-eminent lithographers in the first half of the twentieth century.

In the 1948 London Olympics, in which Art Contests were a sport. John Copley was awarded the silver medal in Graphic Art. John Copley remains the oldest-ever recipient of an Olympic medal.

The impact of COVID – 19 on the arts is impossible to measure. Performances can’t go on. 

Speaking (via FaceTime) with our treasured theatre friends Mary and Joe, we learned that their Summer Season has been cancelled.

So today Athraigh Studio offers you a small exhibition of prints depicting life behind the scenes, life behind the theater curtains...

Eugene Camille Fitsch

Born in Alsace-Lorraine in 1892. Fitsch was an instructor at the Art Students' League where he taught etching, lithography and woodcut. In addition, Fitsch was a scenic artist who designed over 120 plays. Many of his prints are behind the scenes views of Broadway and Off- Broadway plays. He died in Brewster, MA 1972.
